Reflections

Research is an area that is critical to advancing practice--in both nursing and education.   Delaware Tech is working to establish an Institutional Review Board making conducting original research possible for faculty and students.

I will continue to investigate my areas of interest through literature reviews until I can conduct research.  My current interests include patient coaching and developing the growth mindset in students and patients.

Coaching is a powerful tool nurses can use in addition to education to help patients crystallize their goals, develop an action plan, and achieve a healthy lifestyle.

The growth mindset also is a powerful tool patients and students can use to self-actualize and meet their full potential.

In order to sharpen my research skills, I enrolled in a University of Delaware graduate level statistics course to better understand statistical analysis.  I've also been accepted to Teacher College, Columbia University's doctoral program in Nursing Education where I plan to explore the concepts of coaching and mindset in the context of nursing education.

Activities

  • In July, 2015 I attended the DTCC Undergraduate Research Workshop to learn more about research in community colleges.  I piloted data collection and analyzing with several course sections following the conference.
  • I'm currently working on an article and presentation to highlight coaching techniques staff nurses can use to help patients reach their health goals.
